AFGA as a member association of the International Planned Parenthood Federation receives core funds for running IPPF-supported activities and the member associate running costs. Core Fund supports providing Reproductive Health services to vulnerable women and girls, empowering women and youths, advocating for reproductive health services, and mobilizing resources for AFGA. The fund supports nine Family Welfare Centers 5 in Kabul (Rabia Balkhi, Istiqlal, Malalai Hospital, Policlinic, and Ahmad Shah Baba Mina Hospital), one in Nangarhar Regional Hospital, one in Herat Regional Hospital, one in Balkh Regional Hospital, and one in Parwan provincial hospital. Also supports three Community Outreach Midwives, two in Nangarhar and one in Kabul. During the year 2023, the Core Fund Project team delivered quality integrated Reproductive Health (RH) services to clients through nine Family Welfare Centers (FWCs)/Static Clinics and three Community Outreach Midwives in different provinces. The nine static clinics and three Community Outreach Midwives reached out to 324,684 clients and delivered a total of 1,547,282 services throughout the year. AFGA with the support of UNFPA has been implementing RH activities since 2006 and mainly contributed in the implementation of family planning activities, including family planning service providers’ capacity building and storage and supply of RH/family planning commodities during the early time of the partnership.  The United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) is the United Nation’s RH agency. Their mission is to deliver a world where every pregnancy is wanted, every childbirth is safe, and every young person’s potential is fulfilled. AFGA is a crucial partner of UNFPA at the country level. Under the UNFPA Project, AFGA provides its services through 4 components: Youth and Adolescents, Reproductive Health, Family Planning and Humanitarian, through 14 Mobile Health Teams (MHTs), 25 Family Health Houses (FHHs), one Midwifery Helpline (MHL), one Integrated Youth Space and four Regional Warehouses in Kabul, Balkh, Herat and Kandahar Provinces.  In March 2023, AFGA initiated the Last Mile Assurance Pilot Project. Through this project, 48 volunteers from Kabul, Herat, and Balkh Provinces are assigned to support the teams effort in the distribution of different kits and commodities, assist in public awareness-raising activities, and assist in stock counts, and basic assessments of commodities that might be damaged, expired, or out-of-stock. ...

The JSB 2 Project was funded by the Government of Japan through IPPF. The project started in June 2023 and ended in November 2023. It promoted Reproductive Health Services through 45 Community Outreach Midwives and 59 Family Health Houses (FHHs) in 8 provinces of Afghanistan. The services are provided in Parwan, Kapisa, Logar, Balkh, Laghman, Bamiyan, Badakhshan and Samangan Provinces. AFGA Satellite Health Clinic in Gayan District of Paktika Province also provided health services to the earthquake-affected population. During the project life cycle a total of 248,165 services were provided and a total of 110,299 clients were reached. These services included Family Planning, Gynecology, STI, HIV, safe abortion care, subfertility, urology, and non-reproductive health services.  A training workshop was conducted for JSB 2 project assistants in the AFGA main office. Besides, 20 midwives from Logar and Laghman provinces participated in the LARC training conducted in Rabia Balkhi Maternity Hospital. The project team also participated in the DHIS 2 Orientation and Result Framework Workshop facilitated by IPPF/SARO. In addition, under this project, a 2-Day Malaria Refresher Training was conducted for FHH midwives of Logar Province. Stream-3 Emergency Response Project is an IPPF humanitarian internal fund. AFGA and IPPF are committed to providing Minimum Initial Service Package (MISP) to the affected population during/post-crisis. In 2023, Stream-III has supported AFGA to provide MISP services to the affected population from earthquake in Herat Province.  After the struck of a 6.3 magnitude earthquake in the west of Herat City in Herat Province, western Afghanistan. Several aftershocks have occurred since, with the initial quake felt in neighboring Badghis and Farah provinces. A huge number of families have been displaced, more than 2000 died and approximately 10000 people injured in Herat province due to the earthquake. Partners and local authorities are concerned about the cold weather and the limitation of livelihood resources in the area.  Immediately, after the approval of the Stream-3 Project by IPPF, AFGA officially launched the health service provision to the affected people through the Emergency Response Committee established by the Health Cluster and Provincial Public Health Directorate of Herat. The main purpose was to provide immediate humanitarian medical assistance for the affected people by organizing three mobile Health Team vans which were sufficiently equipped with the needed tools, medicines, and professional individuals.  Through this project, AFGA provided 27,741 medical and counseling services to 26,332 clients. The Local Health System Sustainability (LHSS) project supported by USAID, led by Abt and implemented by AFGA provides ultrasound services through 4 ultrasonologists in Rabia Balkhi, Balkh, Herat and Nangarhar Static Clinics. Besides, AFGA provides community-based services through 10 Community Outreach Midwives (COMs) in Kabul Province pre-urban areas. After the collapse of the ex-regime many people became jobless, especially women, and the poverty line declined to 90%. The purchasing power of people went down. There was a high demand between women and girls for receiving cheap services. Therefore, AFGA initiated this project and installed four ultrasound machines in Kabul Rabia Balkhi Hospital, Herat RH, Nangarhar RH, and Balkh. Now, there are 4 ultrasonologists in 4 static clinics providing US services with only 50 Afs which is 20% of market people.  AFGA wants to decrease its dependency on external donors for services provision so for the sustainability of its services AFGA started the development of a business & sustainability plan.  Additionally, the community outreach midwives provide essential SRH services to communities such as HIV counseling, STI counseling, Family Planning General counseling, provision of short-term family planning methods, post-abortion counseling, urology counseling, infertility, and subfertility counseling at the clients’ doorstep, and more importantly, referring clients to nearest health facilities, especially for ultrasonography services and hopefully in near future for broad SRH services in AFGA’s CRHC. This will help AFGA to be self-dependent and secure SRH services in the target sites. NORAD Project with the goal of saving lives of women and girls through improving Reproductive Health (RH), and Maternal and Child Health (MCH) provided quality RH and MCH services through a multi-pronged community-led approach in 11 Provinces of Afghanistan. 95 Community Outreach Midwives (COMs) and 75 Family Health Houses provided a total of 302,199 essential Reproductive Health and Mothers and Child Health Services to the 127,034 clients.  Two mobile health clinics continued their work and provided RH services in pre-already selected sites in Kabul city and delivered quality reproductive health services. LARC training was conducted for the Parwan and Kapisa Provinces FHHs midwives in Rabia Balkhi Maternity Hospital. Besides, the Data Management Training through the Care Mother Application was successfully conducted for FHH midwives of Balkh, Herat, and Logar provinces.  The supervisory visits were conducted to the 19 project COMs and 18 FHHs in Parwan, Logar, Laghman, and Kapisa Provinces. Besides, two Mobile Health Teams of the project were also supervised, and necessary feedback was provided.
